Description
János Lukács emigrated from Hungary in 1946 as a young man of twenty-three years. He settled in the United States and became a world-renowned and respected historian during his many decades of teaching and writing. His books, written in English under the name of John Lukacs, have been published here in Hungary since the 1990s. "I write with a Hungarian spirit, a European spirit, in English, in America. It sounds nice logical. Maybe it's true." This striking self-characterization is nuanced by the fact that the author has occasionally written in his mother tongue throughout his career - although not a book, but lectures, studies, essays, comments, commemorations, reviews, scratches, journalism on longer and shorter breaths. We once published this slice of John Lukacs' oeuvre for Hungarian readers under the title Hungarian Writings (Európa Könyvkiadó, Budapest, 2007), and now we have completed the collection with new texts that have emerged since then. "The reader can now be convinced of what his interlocutors have already done during his visits home: John Lukacs feels the tastes, smell and form of his mother tongue perfectly, while retaining the twists and turns of his youth - that other Hungary." (Balázs Ablonczy) "I don't know anyone else who would represent the almost extinct genre of historical essay at such a high level." (Mihály Szegedy-Maszák)
